Broken Promise of a New Day

Sometimes the dream world is more pleasant than real life because it's still a world where anything can happen. Because, sometimes reality just gets in the way of happiness. When that happens, being somewhere else isn't such a bad thing, if anything it's a welcome respite.

Sometimes you envy children because they are still allowed to get lost in that land of imagination, that land where they're still allowed to be secret agents or cowboys, where adulthood still resembles their favorite movies. They haven't yet swallowed the bitter pill of life, and forget rose-colored glasses, they have rose-colored eyes. Eyes that still see the potential for good that the world still has, rather than for what the world has turned into. They awaken with stars and dreams in their eyes, their biggest concern of the day being whether or not they'll find the free toy in their cereal box at breakfast and what is going to happen to their favorite characters on the next episode of their favorite cartoon. They get out of bed with sleep still in their eyes and enthusiasm for facing the new day that you grow envious of.

Each day is a new adventure and a fresh beginning. Somewhere along the way you forgot how to wake up with a smile on your face, your enthusiasm for life replaced by the security and comfort of routine. With adulthood and the trappings that come with it, you had let life take over... the promise of a new day had been broken.

Last night, I spent a good part of the evening taking dictation from my 5 year old son. He had made a series of drawings, telling a story...and my job was to write EXACTLY what he was saying for each page.

It was a story of a hero nammed Tommy, and he had the power to change into different creatures. And he fought his arch enemy Poras, who had this giant sword.

I'm going to laminate and have the pages bound today...

It's amazing what kids can create.

Barbara: I dipped into "the vaults" for that one. It's something I posted on my old livejournal blog back in 2002. I still post over there because I still have several friends on there-- just not as frequently as I used to. I'm taking my best posts from there and reposting them here as my audience here is quite different than my audience over there (not in a good way or bad way-- just different).

Phoenix: That's really cool about the book! Children have such imaginations then they get sent off to public school where they're basically taught "group-thought" and unless they have good teachers they start to lose any semblance of individuality and creativity. I wish your son the best of luck in retaining his imagination as long as possible-- that's something that once lost, is quite difficult to ever get back!

The important thing to do is to try not to forget those qualities... reaffirmations like this excellent post help.

This is beautiful. In recent times I have been more purposeful in having fun and being more childlike. Some days it works, and then some days the drudgery of daily life wins out. I wear a bracelet from Children's Hospice that reads, "Today is a gift - have fun!" That phrase was given by Dustin who passed away at age 11. It's a good reminder to me to enjoy life however short or long it may be.

Godwhacker: Thank you for the kind words about my post, they're much appreciated.

Amber: Thank you for your kind words as well. I think we all need to remind ourselves from time to time that none of us truly knows when our number will be up. We should live each day as a gift and truly appreciate all the promise that the days we do have have to offer us.
